A well maintained 450 ridden by a fast motocross guy will easily go 60 hours on a topend (piston, rings, timing chain). This is as long as you're not doing stupid shit like bouncing off the Rev limiter in the air. For your average joe/trail rider I would push it to 80-100 hours. The key is frequent oil changes and a clean air filter.

I have ridden both, below is some feedback for you: KTM500 leans more towards technical offroad and is about 15 pounds lighter and makes a couple more HP. CRF450L gives you technical offroad capability, but is the better bike for dualsport.

One of the oils I've tried was the 5w40 synthetic Rotella T. If you're that concerned, use what you feel comfortable with. Using a 40 wt instead of a 50 wt oil isn't the end of the world and there are a LOT of guys using the 15w40 on bikes that call for 50 or even 60wt without issues. I use it on both sides.
For the US spec 350 FEs and EXC-F the oil change intervals are in miles, 31 miles for the first service then every 500 miles roughly which is a little more reasonable than every 15 hours. However this is still excessive and most owners don't follow that.
with a lot of clutch work you may want to change your oil more often. The recommended interval is 15 hrs. '03 KTM 450 EXC '02 KTM 640 LC4e '01 Honda XR650R '00

Broken Bolts and blown out oil filter cover. I've been trying to fix this major issue for over a month and going insane from not being able to ride my2006 KTM 450 EXC. Before investing in a work wrench I sheared off a bolt head on the two which hold the front oil filter cover in place.

KTM's manual recommends that after every 105 amateur (that's me) hours to do the following: Change the spark plug and spark plug connector. Change the piston. Check/measure the cylinder. Check the cylinder head. Change the valves, valve springs and valve spring seats. Check the camshaft and cam lever.
